Origin windows feature a unique flush sash arrangement on both the inside and the outside. This “twin flush” feature is not available on any other all aluminium window.
Other systems such as the new Senior window offer the flush sash arrangement on the outside. This feature is also to be found amongst most PVCu flush casement window as well as hybrid wood and aluminium windows.
The one thing about the Origin aluminium window, even if it divides opinion, is that its appearance is certainly unique amongst aluminium windows. Where we think the Origin window scores is that it looks ideal as a contemporary looking window as well as a traditional window to mimic the flush sashes of old timber windows.
Origin windows used to replace old Crittall Windows.
Origin windows were recently used in a Buckinghamshire home fitted with original Crittall windows. These period metal windows in our view really do play a vital role in the overall appearance of the property. Some people have chosen to simply rip these out and replace them with any type of plastic or aluminium window.
The more discerning homeowner and one that actually values the aesthetics of their home is often faced with challenges when it comes to replacing old metal windows. Over time these windows have twisted, are draughty, aren’t that secure with only single point locking and are hard to maintain.
Properties with old Crittall or other metal windows really have only have four realistic options when it comes to improving or replacing them.
- Replace the original metal windows with new steel windows by Crittall.
- Employ a company that is expert in the refurbishment of original metal windows.
- Retain the original metal windows and improve them with secondary double glazing.
- Replace the original windows with any PVCu, timber or aluminium window.
- Find an aluminium window designed to replicate old steel windows.
With the final option, there are several systems companies and individual specialist window firms that have designed windows to replicate the appearance of old Crittall Windows. AluK with their BD58ST system and Smarts with their Alitherm Heritage 47 have two of the best in our view.
Can Origin windows be used to replace old Crittall Windows?
The issue of window aesthetics is always a subjective and a personal one. Some people who like one type of product may not like another. The flush sash arrangement and slightly thicker sight lines of Origin windows may not instantly be thought suitable but in this particular home they appear to work well.
Importantly, for this homeowner that chose Origin windows, his satisfaction with his new aluminium windows in his property is the most important thing of all.
In the original property, the windows had been in place since it was built. As expected over the last 80 years they had deteriorated as had the timber subframes they were fitted into. Additionally they were very draughty and offered no energy saving properties whatsoever.
Any new window would have solved most of the problems with security, energy efficiency and comfort. They would also help reduce noise thanks to the two panes of glass.
The original steel windows were individual modules fitted within timber subframes and timber mullions. Had the subframes been retained its arguable that the Origin Twin Flush windows would have looked out of place. However where the Origin windows have worked very well, despite being thicker on the front than a typical Crittall replacement window is that they’ve virtually replicated the sight lines of the original subframes upon their removal. This has played a key role in retaining the original aesthetics of the property.
Specifications of Origin Windows for Crittall Replacements.
The Origin windows were polyester powder coated in a grey/brown colour RAL 8019 matt. This is actually a very appealing colour in many homes and we know it’s gaining a huge amount of popularity. There are other types of ‘Mock Tudor’ properties in the South East London areas such as Chislehurst, Petts Wood, Bromley and Eltham where RAL 8019 is ideal.
To replicate the original window design, the Origin windows were glazed with sealed units having diamond leads to the outside. Additionally, the dummy sash arrangement was used throughout the property with windows set upon a cill. All in all the Origin windows provided.

Any replacement of old metal windows needs careful design.
The fitting of Origin Twin Flush windows to this property previously fitted with old metal windows has worked because the window company considered how the windows were to be designed. As we mentioned earlier, the removal of the original subframes has helped. The side by side Origin windows have contributed to replicating the original aesthetics of the windows that previously looked as they did with the existing subframes.
We think the result has worked. It’s proved on this particular installation that Origin windows are not just suitable for contemporary properties but designed right suitable for the replacement of old metal windows.
